Resident Cooking Oil thefts are still happening across the county, so we wanted to update you on why its happening and what you can do to prevent it. Why is it happening? Cooking oil is being stolen and taken away to make bio-diesel. This bio-diesel is sold on the black market at a profit, often funding further organised criminality. Prevention: Check their existing disposal arrangements are with a legitimate waste collection company. Check for ID. Challenge suspicious people on site. If it does not feel right, report it. Locking doors. Locking rear gates. Installation of CCTV with clearly visible CCTV in operation signage. Installation of security lighting. Good communication with neighbouring businesses, sharing information i.e. Pub watch. Inform and train your staff to be vigilant.
Why take action? 'Chip shop fuel' can damage modern diesel engines and can clog up vital components such as fuel injectors and emission control devices. The crimes have also been noted by the Environment Agency and HMRC as areas of concern. Other crimes could occur during a theft of oil as an offender assesses your premises. The cost of cooking oil is on the increase as a result of this crime which will may have an impact on your business. This type of crime often links into organised criminality.
